Each year the Midland Daily News asks its readers to help us highlight their favorite businesses. We encourage you to take this opportunity to learn more about this local business or employee that earned the important distinction of Readers’ Choice!
Name of Employee/Business: Doak Stolz, branch manager at Stifel and Stolz-Smith Financial Consulting Group, was voted best investment broker
Business location, phone, website: 415 Rodd Street, Suite 1; 989-941-3501; https://www.stifel.com/branch/mi/midland-mi
How many years in business: Stolz has been a financial advisor for more than 35 years, starting with AG Edwards, then Wells Fargo, then Stolz-Smith Financial Group, which joined Stifel three years ago. Stifel was founded in 1890.
What is the best part of your job: I like being important to people. I like being able to help people take the stress out of their world financially. Of course, I also like investing money. When I got in this business 35 years ago, Dow was at 3,000 and now it’s at 30,000. Thanks to our stewardship and the wonderful companies of America, it’s been a wonderful way to build wealth.”
What is the toughest part of your job: “The toughest part is settling estates. We work with a family, a client, their whole lifetime, and we get to know the second generation. That’s our goal – to see you through your whole lifetime of financial independence and pass it on to the second generation. But that’s still hard (when clients pass on), because people become our friends.”
What sets you apart from your competitors: “I’ve worked with and even trained many of the financial advisors in Midland. They’re all very good and competent people. They do this job nobly. Probably what sets us apart is the length of time we’ve been doing this and the size of our practice. (We measure the size of the practice by the number of households and the number of assets under management.)”
What would you like to tell the people who selected you Readers’ Choice: “Thank you for your confidence in us and what we do, and also for your friendship. It’s a good way to make a living. It’s a good profession when you do it right. Midland’s a great place to do this job.”
