Name of employee/business: Kevin Spencer, Edward Jones Investments

Business location, phone, website: 416 West Wackerly Street; 989-832-8428; edwardjones.com

How many years in business: Spencer started with Edward Jones in October of 2010 after teaching at Chestnut Hill Elementary for 20 years while also coaching in Midland Public Schools.

What is the best part of your job: “I am a people person. I am one that finds it tough to leave a social situation because I like to get to know folks and find out their story. This ends up being the best part of my job. I get to meet people, find out what is important to them and their families, discover their life goals, develop plans to help them reach these goals and work with them to achieve them. It is thrilling to see it all work and see the happiness they have. I love my job.”

What is the toughest part of your job: “The toughest part of the job is the part I can’t control: the market. Making sure others understand that we can’t control it or even ‘time it’ is hard. There are so many factors that make it work and reasons to stay invested in quality instead of the ‘next big thing.'”

What sets you apart from your competitors: “What sets me apart is a tough one. I don’t normally compare myself to others very often. What I do know is that my parents taught me that honesty and integrity are essential to success. I have tried to live my life around those lessons for as long as I can remember. Also, the 20,000 employees that work for my clients at Edward Jones is unmatched. Our clients are the focus and always will be.”

What would you like to tell the people who selected you Readers’ Choice: “It is an honor to be selected a RC winner. I do not take these awards lightly or for granted. Our branch takes a lot of pride in doing things right for our clients at all times and treating them like family.”

Why did you decide to make the career change from teaching to being a financial advisor: “I joined an investment club when I first came to work in Midland, and it was something that I became passionate about. I was a client of Edward Jones and was recruited away from teaching for another passion. It was a tough decision at the time. I loved teaching/coaching. (But) I made the leap. I’m still teaching, just older students and different content.”
