The deduction handed out to Everton for breaching profit and sustainability rules has led to predictions that Manchester City and Chelsea could face even harsher punishment
A former financial advisor to Manchester City has warned the reigning champions and Chelsea that they face relegation from the Premier League due to Everton’s points deduction.
The Toffees were hit with a record-breaking 10 point deduction on Friday after being found guilty of breaching profit and sustainability rules. The decision has dropped them into the relegation zone, with Sean Dyche‘s side facing an uphill battle to stay up.
An independent commission found Everton had overspent by around £24million over the past five years. While Everton have announced they will appeal the judgement, attention is already turning to City and Chelsea, with those clubs also under investigation.
City have been charged with 115 alleged breaches of the Premier League’s financial rules, while the Blues are facing questions over payments connected to former owner Roman Abramovich.
With the level of punishment metered out to Everton firmly in mind, Stefan Borson, a lawyer who has previously advised City, has sounded a warning to his former club. Borson believes that even relegation could be possible for the champions and for Chelsea.
“Without seeing the judgement/award -10 points for Everton feels harsh for a straightforward FFP breach to me. But reinforces that sanctions against City [if proven] and now Chelsea [if charged and admitted on the off-books payments] will be potentially relegation inducing,” he said.

“One thing is for sure, given the scale of this sporting sanction, Chelsea’s calculus [in my opinion] that they could breach PL P&S [Profit and Sustainability] and just take a fine as a cost of doing business, must be in urgent and immediate reconsideration.
“The January window may be interesting. Even in the best case, they can no longer rely on being able to convince an Independent Commission to accept their Covid and Sanctions allowances as exceptional adjustments [to the extent that was the plan].
“A glimpse from today’s judgment as to why the City case takes so long (so much longer than Everton). Everton was really a relatively vanilla P&S breach case over the short period in question. City’s case is 10x more complex/voluminous. It has many more moving parts, more documents, more witnesses of fact and potentially, more experts.”

While the Premier League are backing the commission, Everton have been left furious. As well as insisting they will appeal, the Toffees also dropped a heavy hint they will be closely watching the outcome of the investigations into City and Chelsea.
“Everton Football Club is both shocked and disappointed by the ruling of the Premier League’s Commission. The Club believes that the Commission has imposed a wholly disproportionate and unjust sporting sanction,” Everton said in a statement.
“The Club has already communicated its intention to appeal the decision to the Premier League. The Club will also monitor with great interest the decisions made in any other cases concerning the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules.”
